DA Voices

What is your New Years resolution and what are you doing to fulfill it?

Skating through the California cold

You probably won’t ever feel more like a Californian until you ice skate in a man-made winter wonderland surrounded by lit palm trees trying to do your best Kristi Yamaguchi impression. San Jose’s beloved winter tradition since the ‘90s, Downtown Ice, is an annual family-friendly skating rink where you can rent skates for $17 ($15 for children 10 and younger) and skate your holiday troubles away. Granted, the holidays are over, but the event doesn’t end until Feb. 7. The circular ice rink is a bit small but it does have a divider between the outer rink for wall grabbers and inner rink for more experienced skaters. Be prepared to dodge falling children and adults with the occasional dreaded shoulder latch, because there will be many of them. Weekday nights are highly recommended to avoid the over-zealous holiday lovers who surely still have yet to take down their christmas lights. There is also a gourmet hot chocolate stand next to the ice rink if you have a sweet tooth or crave something rich to warm yourself up with. Friendly people who work there decorate each drink with whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate syrup and a small snowman head. Downtown Ice is a San Jose tradition sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines and local olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi.

De Anza Dons softball positive after 9-1 score against Ohlone College

De Anza Dons softball team scored a single point throughout their match against Ohlone College.
Both teams kept their score still throughout the first innings until Ohlone scored their first point at the top of the second. They scored four more points in the third inning.
At the bottom of the fourth shortstop, Carmen Urtecho (12) stole third and ohlone made an error allowing her the first run of the game.
“I feel like we really improved on communication and being in the game mentally,” said Urtecho, “We need to improve on our hitting and becoming more aware of our strike zones.”
“Today has been one of our best games,” said coach, Megan Finney Kravets. “We were pretty solid all around we just need to work on attacking the ball.”
Although their 9-1 score was not too praise-worthy, the team’s positive attitude powered through the loss.
“Our team is definitely getting stronger,” said Adrienne Hernandez, “This game was a big improvement from previous ones.”

Cheer team wins competition

After two days of competition, they met with judges on Saturday and received a score of 86.48 points out of 100. Each of the seven members of the team were awarded a medal, as well. Coach, C.J.
